Ordering
Q. How do I go about making an order?
A. With a simple phone call to Mike Fidler on 01635 42588 or email mike@thfjoineryltd.co.uk we can clarify your requirements, discuss the details and arrange the next step in getting the ball rolling. Usually, this involves a brief site visit to discuss the job further, take measurements and produce a competitive quote.
Paying for my Joinery items.
Q. When do I have to pay for my items?
A. We normally ask for a deposit up front at the start of the job and the final balance upon delivery.
Delivery
Q. How do you deliver?
A. We have a large long wheel base flatbed truck which is big enough to deliver virtually all of the items that we produce. If for some reason your item will not fit, we will arrange for a suitable alternative. We also use a local courier service if for any reason we are unable to deliver ourselves.
Q. How long do you take to deliver?
A. As soon as your joinery is completed we can arrange for delivery that very same day if needed. In cases when the joinery is ready before your site needs it, we can keep it back until a date that best suits you.
Q. What times do you deliver?
A. We can arrange for delivery at anytime during our business operating hours of Mon-Fri, 8:00am-5:00pm. If you have a preferable time for delivery, we will strive to be there for a time that best suits you.
Q. How much do you charge for delivery?
A. Deliveries to the Newbury and local area are free but deliveries to destinations outside of this area may require special arrangements or a courier service. In this case, an additional delivery quote may be required when we quote for the joinery.
Q. Can I avoid delivery charges by collecting the items myself?
A. Collection in person is absolutely fine, once the job is complete we will give you a confirmation call and you can arrange for collection at a time that suits you best.
Painting, Staining and/or finishing my product
Q. What finish do you apply to the Joinery Products?
A. We have a professional painter in our purpose built paint shop that can bring your job up to whatever level of finish you may require. Some customers prefer to have their joinery items brought up to a finish in our workshop e.g. application of a gloss coat. Others however prefer to have us apply just an undercoat, or a coat of primer and then arrange for their own painter/decorator to finish the job on site once its fitted in place and no longer liable to any minor damage. The choice is yours.
The same applies for staining or oiling, be it a completed job with base and topcoats, or just a base coat.
Q. Will my item be given a preservative coating?
A. All softwood items are given a clear preservative treatment before painting. If the timber is then given 2 coats of micro porous paint, the timber can last indefinitely. It should be repainted every 5 years and should last in excess of 30 years.
Alternatively the most effective softwood protection for external joinery, including windows and doors, is a process that uses vacuum pressure technology to force industrial solvent preservative deep into the wood. If required, we can send your softwood items off to a third party contractor who can then pressure treat the timber and certify they have done so.
This process isn’t always the most cost-effective option however and it is often a good idea to look into a hardwood option. Hardwoods do not require a preservative treatment as they contain tannic acids, which remarkably, give the timber its own weather resistance.
Q. How much do you charge for painting/staining?
A. Our prices for painting or staining your items are extremely competitive and once we have discussed the level you require your items finished at, we will adjust the quote accordingly. If required we can give you a quote for either option and allow you to make your decision based upon that.
Looking after my Joinery item
Q. What is the best way to ensure my timber product lasts?
A. All of our softwood items are given a preservative before they are painted so should last a very long time if correctly looked after. It should be repainted every 5 years to provide a good weather tight exterior surface. Provided it is looked after correctly, there’s no reason why it shouldn’t last in excess of 30 years.
Hardwoods are longer lasting and more durable and don’t necessarily require any protection. Never the less, they too will normally have a stain or finish which will also give it an increased longevity.
Customizing a product to my size and taste
Q. Can I have an item made especially so it is exactly the size I require?
A. We offer a bespoke service at THF Joinery where every product is individually made to order. This way, every job we do is made to exactly the style, size and timber that you the customer may choose.
All we ask is that you provide us with an indication of what you require and we will be happy to do the rest.
Window and Door Ironmongery
Q. Do you always supply window and door ironmongery with your joinery products?
A. Whether your windows or doors come with ironmongery fitted, it is entirely up to you. We will discuss all of the options when we run through the details and your quote will be built up accordingly.
Q. What ironmongery do you use on windows?
A. A popular choice of window ironmongery is the black antique cockspur, but we can obtain a wide range of styles and finishes. If required, we will strive to supply an ironmongery to match an existing style within a property.
Q. What door furniture do you use?
A. There are literally hundreds of different styles and finishes of door hardware available and because everybody’s opinions and tastes differ, we leave this decision up to you.
We will strive to supply an ironmongery to match existing handles and styles within a property if required.
We can fit traditional sash locks, dead locks, night latches, or alternatively we can incorporate more modern systems such as multi-point espagnolette lock systems.
Q. Can I provide my own ironmongery?
A. If you wish to supply your own ironmongery, all you need to do is let us know and your quote will be adjusted accordingly.
